Tadley is a town and civil parish in the Basingstoke and Deane district of Hampshire, sitting on the northern border where Hampshire meets Berkshire. It lies 5.5 miles north of Basingstoke and around 10 miles south-west of Reading.
The town's name derives from Old English โ Tadde (toad or frog) and ley (a clearing in the woods) โ so quite literally, a clearing in the woods with frogs.
Tadley's modern growth was driven by the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment (AWRE) โ now AWE โ in nearby Aldermaston during the 1950s and 60s, which brought thousands of families to the area.
Read Full History โA beloved local legend claims that treacle mines once existed beneath Tadley. Locals were fondly called "Tadley Treacle Miners" well into the 20th century. The tradition lives on every June with the annual Treacle Fair, organised by the Loddon Valley Lions Club.
Tadley was featured in the Sunday Times Best Places to Live list in 2017 โ testament to its quality of life and community spirit.
The A340 runs through the town centre. Nearest railway: Bramley (~2.7 miles). Stagecoach South provides bus links to Basingstoke.
